A Strategic Collaboration Between Coffee Industry Corporation (Papua New Guinea) and MG Corporation (Japan)— Featuring the Bando Coffee Dry Factory Model —
Papua New Guinea is home to some of the world’s most distinctive specialty coffee, cultivated in fertile volcanic soils and high-altitude regions known for producing exceptional Arabica beans.
Renowned for its rich aroma, balanced acidity, and complex flavor profile, Papua New Guinea coffee continues to gain recognition among international roasters, specialty coffee buyers, and coffee professionals worldwide.
However, despite its growing global reputation, many coffee cooperatives, smallholder farmers, and rural producers still face significant challenges in maintaining consistent quality standards and accessing premium international specialty coffee markets.
To support the long-term growth of Papua New Guinea’s coffee industry, the Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) of Papua New Guinea and MG Corporation of Japan have established a strategic research and development partnership focused on coffee quality improvement, post-harvest processing innovation, and sustainable specialty market access.

Why This Project Matters
As global demand for traceable, sustainably produced, and high-quality specialty coffee continues to grow, Papua New Guinea has significant potential to strengthen its position in the international coffee industry.
This initiative aims to bridge the gap between rural coffee producers and global specialty markets by improving processing quality, strengthening supply chain systems, and supporting long-term industry development.
Research & Development Focus Area
Advancing Coffee Quality Through Modern Processing System
A core focus of the initiative is the improvement of coffee quality through advanced post-harvest processing technologies, standardized quality management systems, and practical technical support for producers and cooperatives across Papua New Guinea.
By strengthening processing efficiency and quality control at the production level, the project aims to help Papua New Guinea coffee meet the growing expectations of international specialty coffee markets.
Key focus areas include:
- Improving bean consistency and grading accuracy
- Enhancing moisture control and drying management systems
- Reducing defective beans and post-harvest losses
- Strengthening cup quality evaluation and flavor profiling
- Establishing traceability and quality assurance systems
- Supporting export-ready specialty coffee standards
Through research, field implementation, and technical collaboration, CIC and MG Corporation are working to develop sustainable processing models that improve both coffee quality and long-term value creation for rural coffee producers.

Bando Coffee Dry Factory Model Concept
Building an Integrated Processing and Quality Management System for Papua New Guinea Coffee
One of the key components of this initiative is the development of the Bando Coffee Dry Factory Model Concept, designed to function as an integrated coffee processing, quality control, and export preparation hub for cooperatives and rural coffee producers across Papua New Guinea.
The model aims to strengthen post-harvest processing efficiency, improve coffee quality consistency, and support the production of export-ready specialty coffee that meets international market standards.
